Nicolas, son of Edme:
From Sacy to Paris by way of Auxerre

| Although Nicolas wished to follow his fathers footsteps
and become a farmer, this was not to be. At an early age he developed a passion for books,
having taught himself to read and write French using the family Bible and a book
venerating the lives of Saints. In 1745, at the age of 11, he was sent from Sacy to
further his education. After several short years of rudimentary instruction in Paris and
in schools in Burgundy, he was apprenticed to a master printer in the town of Auxerre. |
