Helen Mower, class of 1913, on Senior Mountain Day

The Seniors in Cap and Gown are taken to the Mountain in barges then up the chute by means of the little cable car. At dinner that night the Sophomore President presides as Toast Mistress. The entertainment of the evening consists of various Stunts. Possibly you do not know what stunts are, and in fact almost anything is a stunt that is the least bit out of the ordinary. A girl who can tell a funny story, sing a topical song, or dance a jig is a Stuntist. The Stunt committee gathers together all these accomplished people and plans a program for the evening which shall include everything in this line which has delighted the class at former gatherings. For example one of the choicest stunts when I was on the Mountain was a cock fight given by three members of the class. One girl who had on some former occasion developed an ability to crow like a rooster stood upon a chair in a variegated colored kimono, flapped her arms and crowed lustily while two other wound up in blankets with feather dusters attached at the correct angle shouldered each other in an imaginary cock fight. You may think that these plays are not in accordance with the dignity of seniors but for this one night all dignity is thrown aside, no outsiders are present and the girls enjoy themselves to the utmost not allowing themselves to realize that the parting is so near. Next comes the mock class meetings presided over by the various class presidents. All the laughable incidents are carefully reviewed, many of the discussions that came up in class meetings are reproduced as far as possible by the same girls who actually took part in them. At last comes the Senior Class Meeting which is the most anticipated of all. First the girls go to their rooms and hastily slipping off their clothes soon appear clad in cap and gown over their Senior night dresses. Only a candle burns dimly at the President's table. First the medals are distributed to the most popular girl, the class beauty, the class actress, the class athlete etc. perhaps 30 in all. These have been voted upon previously and now the results are announced, the medals bestowed. Then, then comes the most solemn event of all. In an impressive tone the Senior President calls the class role and each girl solemnly responds to her name "Guilty" or "Not Guilty" to the presidents charge "Are you or are you not engaged?” Needless to say dignity unbends at each response of Guilty and applause and best wishes are showered upon the truthful ones.
As you can readily imagine it is quite a long evening's program and sometimes it is well towards sunrise before all the business of the Senior Class Meeting is completed. The regular Senior Banquet is held the following noon, when the Class History and Prophesy are read, in addition to the toasts.
