Book Review

Due Friday by 4 p.m. in my mail box, 310 Skinner

Write a 4-5 review of Berenson’s The Trial of Madame Caillaux. Your review should present a summary of the author’s main argument and his major points; it should also present your evaluation of the work.

As with any essay, your review should have an introduction and conclusion. In this review use the introduction to set out what you judge to be the author’s main argument. In following paragraphs, devote yourself to summarizing main points made in the chapters. [Recall that you’re responsible for the prologue, chaps. 1-4, the epilogue, and a chapter of your choice.]

Your evaluation of the book is to be a substantial part of your review. In preparing this you’ll find it helpful to consider such questions as the following:

·        What have you learned by reading the book? About the subjects treated in the book? About the elements of historical research and writing? About of historical change? About the conflicting views in the era?

·        In your judgment, of what historical significance is the chosen subject? Has the author made clear why he believes it holds historical significance?

·        What do you think are the most noteworthy strengths of Berenson’s account? Why?

·        What do you think are the most noteworthy weaknesses of his account? Why?

·        To what extent was the author’s main argument and points and persuasive? Why? If not, why not?
