My Abstract: Farmer's hardship

Posted by Taoran Sun on February 12, 2002 at 22:17:52:

Abstract for history paper 1

Theme: peasants¡¯ hardship before the revolution

Argument: Peasants generally suffer substantial hardship in life in the 18th Century in
France.

Supporting Evidence:
1. The extreme time of fatigue for the farmer during the working half of the year.
2. Farmers psychological self-disdain after long times of suffer: They view themselves as slaves.
3. From a different angle, farmers hobby of saying bad things about the priest, landlord, and everyone else who isn¡¯t there and their contempt towards women show that these people, after too much suffer and being in one of the lowest status in the society, need to have an outlet for their inside fury towards their boss and even their peers, especially transferring the kind of suffer of hardship from upper-class towards the only people below them: women

Connection: Bonnie Smith¡¯s description of farmers¡¯ most important entertainment carnival shows that the carnival has become a way of living apart from the reality to escape their normal hard life: Only people really suffering a lot want to escape the reality.

Conclusion: The farmers living in the 18th Century in France suffers substantial hardship because of the domination of the upper class. They have extremely hard and boring life year in and year out. These kind of long suffer cause their self-disdain, but eventually lead them to use different way to find an outlet of their suppressed emotion, transfer their fury and escape the reality, which eventually led to a climax as the French Revolution began.
