: Theme: The role of the Peasant 16th Century Woman
BOTH DOCUMENTS CONCERN THE 1700S, THE LATE 18TH CENTURY. RATHER THAN THE GENERAL 'ROLE,' TRY TO REPLACE THIS WITH SOMETHING MORE SPECIFIC, A CONCRETE ASPECT OF THEIR ROLE.
: Argument: Two of the articles are writing to demonstrate that different roles of
: women vs. men. The women carry the burden of raising the family, bearing children
: to provide extra farm hands, plus doing all the other work.
I LIKE THE IDEA OF TRYING TO MARSHALL EVIDENCE ON THE RIGID SEXUAL DIVISION OF LABOR IN 18TH CENTURY PEASANT SOCIETY. BUT WATCH OUT FOR OVERSIMPLICATIONS AND SWEEPING GENERALIZATIONS SUCH AS "DOING ALL THE OTHER WORK." I'D LIKE TO SEE YOU DEAL WITH WOMEN AND MEN'S WORK AND ITS COMPLEMENTARITY.
: Evidence: " It is the women who are burdened with all the details of the housework" OKAY, GOOD, BUT NOTE THE TERM 'HOUSEWORK.' WHAT OTHER KIND OF WORK IS NECESSARY TO KEEP A PEASANT FAMILY GOING?
: a quote from baptiste. To relate this to the Bonnie Smith article, " they had
: neither the time or skill to perform household tasks"
GOOD EYE FOR REVEALING DETAIL. WHAT COULD BE THE SOURCE OF THE APPARENT CONTRADICTION. DID 'HOUSEWORK' IN THE 18TH CENTURY MEAN SOMETHING DIFFERENT THAN 'HOUSEWORK' TODAY? I THINK SO AND WHAT IT MEANT IN THE 18TH IS WHAT'S IMPORTANT FOR US AND THE DOCUMENTS SHED LIGHT ON THIS ISSUE.
: Connection: The observer has shown through most of these articles the relationship
: between man and women is clearly distinctly different and separate. The
: Besnard article downplays the role of women. IF YOU WANT TO MAKE A CONNECTION TO 'DIFFERENT AND SEPARATE' WHICH OF THE ARTICLES ALLOWS THAT? OR WHICH OF THE ARTICLES SUGGESTS SOMETHING DIFFERENT? IN THE LATTER WAY YOU CAN MAKE A CONNECTION VIA CONTRAST OR DISAGREEMENT. RELATIONSHIPS CAN BE BETWEEN SIMILARITIES AS WELL AS DIFFERENCES.
