John Locke. Second Treatise on Civil Government. Published in 1690, written in the 1680s and before the Glorious Revolution of 1688. It was once thought that the Treatise was published after the Revolution to justify it. We now know that Locke wrote the work before then. Before 1688, the ideas expressed in the Second Treatise were sufficiently radical that Locke would have been subject to prosecution by the Crown had they been published.
