Serge Courville¡¯s lecture of Dreams and the reality of the Empire focused on the idea of the American dream and how it was an idea that developed in France and existed throughout the world, including Canada. He focused on International geography and the mobilization of people throughout the world during the time of colonialism and after. He spoke of brochures which promoted migration to countries such as Canada, America and Australia. He was trying to show how these brochures were produced in abundance to promote travel not only to America but also to Canada. What I found most interesting was the topic of why the American dream is mainly associated with America. Although there was no definite answer to this question, we concluded that it was due to media, and the resources that America had to offer. I thoroughly enjoyed the lecture, as it was not only well presented but also because it added to my current understanding of globalization. Dr Courville¡¯s emphasis on geography also made me realize the beauty and importance of maps.
