Summary of Two Views of Globalization
Globalization was seen as a natural path for the world to take prior to the events of September 11, 2001. In fact throughout history globalization has been very helpful. Countries help expand their knowledge for something in return. They are interconnected with each other until “death do them part.” However, due to globalization, events that threaten all of the world’s safety are at risk of occurring. It has been through globalization that the events of September 11, 2001 could happen. It was through the very satellites, towers and technology that provide the rest of the world with communication power, that these events were enabled. Knowledge about the creation of weapons of mass destruction and weapons in general is all too easy to obtain. We cannot stop the technology we have spread from becoming a threat to us. Today we don’t have the necessary manpower to police anybody who is involved in illegal operations against the United States or any other country. We are caught up in the same situation in which the Iraqi’s are in. They were raised with beliefs different from ours, but now either we or they must change their beliefs. If one does not conform to the other then “we’re all in trouble.” Now, if something along the lines of bioterrorism or nuclear terrorism occurred, then the whole world would most likely turn to arms control. There is a true hatred of America in many places around the world. Our aim should be to get less people to hate us and that way we would be at less risk of being attacked. America has to be the leader it has involuntarily become and “lead in shaping a judicious form of global governance.”
Would a war in Iraq have the same “good” side effects that other wars have had? Due to globalization, all countries are too interdependent on each other and the situations are too big to handle. In the days of World War II countries shared much less with each other than they do now. World trade is huge. So far the war has gone well ( in 2003). We haven’t really lost anything. Unfortunately, things have a great possibility of getting worse. Everything as far as economy goes is unstable. Economists cannot simply focus on their numbers, they must worry much more about preparing for the what ifs. “Commerce flourishes when there is economic confidence and political stability.” World War II brought stability afterwards. We were stable and we helped our neighbors. However, now it is really a toss up for what will happen. We have friends, we have enemies. Everybody could be with us or against us. Only the war will help us to know if we will end up on top.
