Who Frequented the Brothels? The chart below illustrates what types of men were arrested in Parisian brothels. Soldiers make up a staggering number of those arrested in brothels--three quarters of all those who were arrested combined. It is imperative that we remember, however, that those who were arrested does not reflect exactly who frequented brothels. Could the authorities have turned a blind eye to the bourgeois clients, just as they turned a blind eye to the courtesans the bourgeois kept as mistresses?
