This
painting is symbolic of Rousseau's perception of human nature in
relation to physical nature. The reflection of the mountain upon
the lake is an appropriate representation of Rousseau's idea of
self-reflection as a method of reaching a level of appreciation
for oneself within nature. Evident in his essay,"Fifth Walk,"
Rousseau immersed himself in nature's lakes and greenery as a way
of retreating into his own spirit and finding personal gratitude.
