Hester's
clothing in this painting came from the various countries
she had traveled to. She wrote,
"My
Riding Habit was bought at Rome ... my Hat and Shirt at Naples;
my shoes at Padua, my Stockings at Brescia, my Ruffles at
Genoa, one of my Petticoats at Milan, & the rest of my
dress in England."
The diverse
nature of her dress could stand as an accurate metaphor for
her lifestyle; one that drew from other cultures and lands.
Indeed, her dress can be considered quite odd and most likely
a testimony for her unique life.
