Elizabeth, Lady Holland (nee Webster)

Lady Elizabeth painted with her new spaniel Pierrot by Robert Fagan in 1793.

In this painting Lady Elizabeth, relaxing outside, looks more like an Italian then a stiff English person. The contrast owes its explanation to the fact that while abroad women had more freedom.

Your attention is immediately drawn to the landscape in the background. What could be more exciting and un-English than a smocking volcano. Lady Elizabeth probably wished to convey her experience with such feats of nature and thus impress.
