Ellis Cornelia Knight

This painting of Ellis Cornelia Knight was done by Angelika Kauffmann in 1793.

Kauffmann was a well-known female artist and bluestocking.

In this painting Mrs. Knight is dressed in free flowing garb similar to Lady Elizabeth's. She looks natural - her skin tone has a reddish hue (perhaps from many hours spend walking among the ruins of Rome).

Many people commissioned paintings of this sort to advance certain ideas about themselves. Wishing to convey her intellect, Mrs. Knight chose to pose with writing scrolls and utensils.
