Forbidden Media

The novel Frankenstein stirred much controversy about how far the boundaries between life and death can be pushed. Shelley opened the doors to experimentation and discovery. These controverial views of scientific exploration had been intriquing scientists and the story of Dr. Frankenstein only added to that curiosity.

Soon, the media began to feed into the speculation about whether or not the boundaries of life and death could be broken. They speculated about reviving the dead, achieving immortality, altering the figure, artificial organs and changing future generations.

Through creating movies about characters such as Dr. Frankenstein and his monster, Hollywood allows the audience to explore issues in relation to themselves, but with the comforting notion that only a "mad scientist" such as Dr. Frankenstein, can create such a creature.

Despite the differences between the monster created by Dr. Frankenstein in the novel and on the silver screen, the message was the same. Someone could breathe life into a being that has passed on.
