| Brescia, Italy | "We were in a modern piazza--so modern that there was even a skyscaper in the American stule, though not so high as the Americans make them. The banks and the postoffice were in the pure style of Fascist art--boxlike buildings withou decoration, and with straight lines this way and that, most austere. The skyscrapper was of yellow briakc and, in my eyes, an atrocity. . . . . On one side of the square was a tall statue of a naked young man. His limbs seemed to me wobbly in their lines. The sculptor had taken the liberty with nature in his idea of the beauty of young manhood. On the other side of the square was an open pulpit from which, no doubt, Fascist orators praise the nobility of Sirnor Mussolini and the blessings of Fascisimo." (page 162) |
