Interpreting Maps: Population and Population Density
Lab Exercise
Prepare and interpret 4 maps from the data on population and railways in England and Wales, 1850-1914.
1. Choose a census date (1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891, 1901, or 1911) and construct a map in ArcView that shows the distribution of the population for that date.
2. Using the same date, construct a second map that shows the distribution of the population density.
3. Compare the two maps. Write a brief description and interpretation of the two maps (one page) that 1) describes the main patterns in the maps 2) states the evident differences between the two representations and 3) explains why one map may be more useful and appropriate for choropleth mapping than the other.
4. Choose a different census date (1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891, 1901, or 1911) and construct a map in ArcView that shows the distribution of the population density for that date.
5. Using the same date, construct a second map that uses a different classification scheme for dividing the distribution into levels.
6. Compare the two maps and write a brief statement (one page or less) that 1) describes the main patterns visible in the two maps and 2) considers whether one map is more revealing and useful than the other. If so, why?
Your lab exercise will thus consist of:
· Four maps with appropriate labels and legends. Each should carry an identifying number so they can be readily referenced in your commentary.
· Attached texts with your interpretations (two pages)
