Minority Internships

All of the internships listed in science on other pages of this site are especially looking for underrepresented minority students. These are usually African American, Native American, and Hispanic students who are US citizens. The following have internships specifically intended for minority students.

- American Indian Science and Enginerring Society (AISES) - Explore potential federal service careers.

- AT&T Bell Laboratory

- Caltech MURF Fellowships Program - Research in labs at Caltech campus.

- Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - Office of Minority Health - Various internships/fellowships with the OMH. They also have a substantial list of programs at other sites.

- GEM Consortium - Nonprofit partnership between universities and employers. (website)

- Harvard School of Public Health - Offers undergraduate and high school programs.

- Harvard Undergraduate Internship Program For Minority Students Summer program.

- Hire Diversity - A database for increasing diversity.

- Hispanic Association of Colleges & Universities National Internship Program - Largest Hispanic internship program, can do a search for internships in science.

- Hispanic-Serving Health Professions Schools, Inc. - Fosters the development of public health and research skills of Hispanic Health Professions students.

- HST Summer Scholars Program - at MIT.

- IMDiversity.com - Database of internships. Also has ethnic-specific pages for information.

- Joslin Diabetes Center - A Harvard Medical School Affiliate.

- Kaiser Family Foundation - Barbara Jordan Health Policy Scholars Program - College seniors and recent graduates work in congressional offices to learn about health policy.

- MARC Undergraduate Student Training in Academic Research (U*STAR) Awards

- Microbiology Undergraduate Research Fellowship program (MURF) - For research in microbiology.

- Minority Biomedical Research Support (MBRS) - Provides experience in biomedical research and to encourage students with such experience to pursue further education leading to a Ph.D. or MD/Ph.D. degree, and ultimately, careers in biomedical research.

- Minority Health Professions Foundation - Has several internships with different focuses.

- Minority International Research Access (MIRA) Program - In Peru, Spain, and Czech Republic.

- Minority International Research Training (MIRT) Program - Research projects in Brazil and Uganda.

- Minority International Research Training (MIRT) program - Summer biomedical research internship in international research laboratories in Italy, Jamaica, Republic of Korea, and England.

- Minority Student Summer Research Opportunity Program - At Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, NY.

- National Energy Technology Laboratory - Minority Mentoring and Internship Program - Opportunities are available at the three NETL sites.

- National Institutes of Health (NIH) - a listing of several internship (and employment) opportunities at NIH sites.

- New England Board of Higher Education NEBHE - Almost all medical schools have summer intership programs for undergraduates in such fields as Anatomy & Structural Biology, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Develolpmental & Molecular Biology, Microbiology & Immunology, Molecular Genetics, Molecular Pharmacology, Neuroscience, Pathology, and Physiology & Biophysics. - Office of Naval Research - Naval Research Enterprise Intern Program - Laboratories are in several locations across the U.S.

- Pre-Matriculation Summer Program (PMSP) - Harvard Medical School exposes entering minority students to research and its relevance to clinical medicine.

- Project Success/College - College applicants must have participated in Project Success while in High School in order to be eligible.

- PWSE Summer Intern Program - At Iowa State University.

- QEM Network - Offers health-focused and science focused internships. (website)

- Quality Education for Minorities - The program objective is to promote the professional development of minority undergraduate students through their participation in ocean, marine, and space science research.

- Research Experience for Undergraduates Program (REU) - General REU site for undergraduates. See Internships by Discipline to find REU sites for specific disciplines.

- Summer Enrichment Program - For health services management.

- Stanford School of Medicine - Summer Health Careers Opportunity Program - Summer Honors Undergraduate Research Program (SHURP) - The Program is offered for college students from under-represented groups who are seriously considering research careers in the bio-medical sciences.

- Summer Medical Education Program (SMEP)

- Summer Multicultural Access to Research Training (SMART) - SMART interns conduct research projects in science, math, and engineering fields under the guidance of a faculty mentor and see firsthand graduate student life at a major institution.

- Summer Research Fellowship Program (SRFP) - Open to high school and college students.

- Uniformed Services University of the Health Services - For minority college students, located at Center for Health Disparities, Bethesda, MD.

- United Negro College Fund - Several internships for different fields of engineering and some for sciences.

- US Fish and Wildlife Service and USDA Forest Service Conservation Careers Diversity Internship Program

- Pfizer/UNCF Corporate Scholars Program - For undergrad juniors/seniors, grad students, first year law students, work in business and research areas.

- UNCF•MERCK Undergraduate Science Research Scholarship Awards - For African Americans.

- University of Alabama at Birminham, School of Public Health - Minority International Research Training (MIRT) Program - For minority undergrad, grad and medical students. Research includes tropical and infectious diseases, nutrition, AIDS, and reproductive health. Locations in Bangladesh, Ghana, Guatemala, India, Jamaica, Peru, Trinidad & Tobago.

- University of Arizona Undergraduate Biology Research Program - 140 students accepted per year, can also work year round, but first must start in summer.

- University of Arizona Graduate College Summer Research Institute - For underrepresented undergrad juniors/seniors, 25-30 students.

- Minority Health and Health Disparities International Research Training (MHIRT) - Sponsored by NIH. For underrepresented minorities, should have previous training in Safety and Ethics in Research.

- University of Hawaii - Pacific Internship Programs for Exploring Science - For first generation college students at minority-serving institutions. Undergrad sophomores/juniors.

- UMASS Medical School - 2005 NIH Research Fellowship Program for Minority College Students - For minority students.

- Charles Ross Summer Research Fellowship for Minority Undergraduate/Graduate Students - For underrepresented minorities.

- University of Minnesota - Multicultural Summer Research Opportunities Program - Encourage underrepresented minorities and first generation college students.

- Missouri Graduate School - The Louis Stokes Missouri Alliance for Minority Participation (LS-MoAMP) & Summer Research Program - Research in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

- The University of New Mexico Minority International Research Training Program (MIRT) - Not restricted to minorities, research opportunities for undergrad/grad students to conduct biomedical/behavioral research in Nigeria.

Students who are in those groups of traditionally underrepresented in science (women, members of underrepresented minorities, and those with disabilities) are particularly urged to apply.

The General Electric Faculty for the Future Grant to Mount Holyoke College offer funds for MHC students for science research jobs during the school year and summer internships. It also provides money for attending conferences, and for tutors in the sciences. Please see Sheila Browne, grant director.
