Minority Scholarships
General Electric Faculty for the Future - The General Electric Foundations offer graduate fellowships, forgivable loans, junior faculty grants, and undergraduate research. Grants are also made for undergraduate curriculum development in engineering and business management. More than $1 million a year is allocated for minority engineering and business students scholarships and for student retentionprograms. Historically black engineering schools also receive support. This special program is expected to run through the year 2000 to increase the number of underrepresented minority
and women professors in science, engineering, and business. Requests should be by letter; there are no application forms.
UNCF•MERCK Undergraduate Science Research Scholarship Award For African Americans in the physical sciences and life sciences ($35,000/year). Chelvania Gabriel'98 received one of these Complete funding of junior and senior years.
NEBHE New England's Doctoral Scholars Program is for underrepresented minorities in science, math, and engineering. Full financial support in all years of graduate study. Peer support and frequent reunions with more than 50 Scholars of color already in the program. Program has exceptionally high retention and graduation rate.

NSF has announced a scholarship program for low-income students in the
fields listed below. For complete information, visit the NSF website.
The Lily Foundation has just awarded $50 million to the Hispanic
Scholarship Fund for scholarships intended to assist Hispanic American
college students in completing their education. The competitive
scholarships of $500 - $2500 are for Hispanic students attending community
college, four-year institutions, and graduate/professional schools.
ELIGIBILITY:
Be of Hispanic background (one parent must be fully Hispanic or both
parents must be half Hispanic), Must be a US Citizen or a Permanent Resident (with permanent resident card), Have earned at least 15 undergraduate college credits in the U.S. or Puerto Rico with a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (3.5 on a 5 point scale). Be attending an accredited U.S. college full-time from Fall 1999 through Spring of 2000 (undergraduates must carry at least 12 credits each term, graduate students must carry at least 6 credits each term)
SELECTION: Applications are evaluated on the following criteria
*Academic Achievement (including GPA, and past academic performance)
*Letter of Recommendation (from professor/advisor on official school
letterhead)
*Personal Statement (writing/language skills, personal strengths and
goals, professionalism, community involvement, and other qualities.)
*Financial need (award to be used for only educational purposes)
*The selection criteria may also vary according to donor.
