This
is the course page for European Studies 316, also listed as RES 316
and Politics 316. The course focuses on two major and interconnected
changes that have occurred in Europe since the collpase of the USSR
and the end of the Cold War. First is the question of enlargement
and its impact on the organization and politics of the European Union.
The European community (now the European Union) has undergone five
enlargements,

in

2007
bringing
its membership
to 27 states. How has this changed domestic European politics and
its role in the world?
Second, is the issue of immigration which is related to Europe's
expansion. Europe has always been a place for immigrants, but its
expansion has attracted increased immigration from new neighbors
in the Mahgreb, Middle East, and Eastrn Europe (Russia, Ukraine
, Moldova and the Caucasus). How has this affected Europe
at home - the rise of anti-immigration parties, for example - and
its member states' immigration policies? |
