I don't it could have been entirely avoided, but I do think how dramatic it was could have been, if the government had tried to interfere to correct some issues, instead of believing that everything would correct itself. Its also possible that the government might make it inadvertently worse if they did interfere, if they chose the wrong things to try to stimulate the economy. But I think having them try to fix it is more important than just leaving it alone, hoping that it will figure itself out.
