There are laws prohibiting it, however people do it anyways, it is highly illegal, yet some politicians are afraid to address it since they are at times funded by corporations that utilize such sweatshops. As for domestic slaves that held in the US, it is typically by individuals so when they are caught action is taked against them, since it is against the law.
Just like with most laws they aren't always obeyed nor stictly enforced.
