Joad and his family were in a feudal relationship with their landlord(s) as sharecroppers. The dust bowls made the land useless so there was no crop to produce for them to pay their landlord(they paid with what they produced on the land). The landlord wasn't making any profit either (because of the environmental disaster) and the bank (I think) was coming in destroying the houses on the land so that nobody could live there. (So they had to leave) Everyone was in debt and that's where it spiraled downward.
