The company was going to turn the land into capitalist farms. Instead of feudal sharecroppers, the company wanted to hire laborers and use tractors to farm the land. So the land was not completely useless. It was just that the surplus the company could get by using capitalism would be bigger than the feudal surplus. If the Joad family had wanted to stick around and take their chances, maybe they could have gotten wage labor jobs with the company. The man on the tractor had been part of a family that had lost their land, too.
