Requirements

I expect you to come to class having done the readings and ready to discuss them. I may take attendance and unexcused absences will affect your grade.

There will be three written exercises. Each is a 4-6 page paper. I will post a series of topics that you to choose among, though I am always open to your proposing alternative topics.

I remind you that plagarism is a serious offence. Unattributed use of any sources, including material from the web, will result in a failure for the paper and/or course. You are all bound by the honor code and all of its provisions. I take this very seriously.

There are two required texts:

Thomas Wartenberg, editor, The Nature of Art
David Carrier, The Aesthetics of Comic Books

Both texts are available at the Odyssey Bookshop

Additional readings are available through the electronic reserve site:
http://www.mtholyoke.edu/go/ereserves

Your final grade will be based on the following:
3 papers at 30% each
Class participation 10%

Professor Tom Wartenberg
