In this class, we will explore philosophical issues
encountered in the study of film. Some of the questions we will discuss
are: Why do we need a theory of film? What is a film anyway? Do films
have "authors"? How do films engage our emotions? Can films
be socially critical? What can we learn from films? Our investigation
of these questions will be enriched and tested through our weekly
viewing of films.
The philosophy of film is a relatively new discipline in philosophy,
but it is one that is thriving. In learning about it, we will compare
it to the more traditional approach to theorizing about film that
has existed in the itself quite young discipline of Film Studies.
