Philosophy 275/Film Studies 290:
Philosophy & Film

1. I expect you to attend class and the film screenings (unless we have discussed alternative arrangements. I also expect you to participate in class discussions, so that means doing the reading on time and having something to say about it.

2. There will be three papers. The papers are due October 8, November 8, and December 13. Each paper should be approximately 5-7 pages typed (double-spaced, standard margins, etc.) The papers will focus on theoretical issues in the philosophy of film, using the films we have screened (and others you have seen) as examples to bolster your argument. More detailed instructions will follow.

3. Your grade will be assigned as follows: first two papers: 25%; final paper: 30%; class participation: 20%.

There are three required texts for this course, all available at the Odyssey Bookshop:

Thomas Wartenberg and Angela Curran, eds., The Philosophy of Film: Introductory Text and Readings.
John Hill and Pamela Church Gibson, ed., The Oxford Guide to Film Studies.
Ludwig Wittgenstein, Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus. (This book is not available at the moment.)

A few readings are on electronic reserve (ER). These can be accessed through the Library Home Page, but only through Philosophy 275. There is a special password you need to have that I will mention in class.
