Disability Services

The institution recognizes the importance of protecting the rights of all community members and promoting diversity. Mount Holyoke is committed to providing reasonable accommodations and services that will enable students who qualify under section 504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act and the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act to participate as fully as possible in the College's academic programs.

The College's guiding philosophy regarding the provision of accommodations is that they shall serve as a bridge which enables a student to fully engage in the college experience. These accommodations should be empowering, and the overriding goal is to create an opportunity for greater independence, responsibility, and self-sufficiency.

Self-Advocacy by Students with Disabilities

Mount Holyoke neither imposes accommodations on the student nor pre-empts her responsibility, as a legal and social adult, to define the student's disabilities and/or needs and make sure that they are met. The student must take the initiative to:

  1. identify herself and her needs to Disability Services in 300 Mary Lyon Hall by completing the Disability Registration and Disability Certification forms.
  2. work with Disability Services to specify, arrange, and follow through on accommodations, and
  3. alert the office immediately to problems encountered.
