Global Studies Summer Fellowships
The Global Studies Summer Fellowship (GSSF) funds students for collaborative student-mentor research abroad during the summer. While the mentor will ideally be a Mount Holyoke faculty member working with the student abroad, the mentor may also be a faculty member who remains at MHC or an outside expert. Requirements and Application The international research project needs to involve close mentor-student cooperation, substantive engagement, and critical reflection upon one's experience. Students are expected to complete their work and submit a 4-credit independent study paper (295 or 395 level) by the end of the fall semester. Upon their return, students are required to submit a short reflection piece on their experience to the McCulloch Center, and to present their findings at the annual LEAP Symposium in the fall semester.
Eligibility All students, except graduating seniors, are encouraged to apply for the GSSF. Preference will be given to students who plan to do research abroad directly under a Mount Holyoke College faculty mentor, to students who are going to another country for the first time, and to students whose research abroad will become the basis of a senior thesis.
Funding The GSSF will typically not fund the cost of a study program in another country or airfare, housing, and food support for a student going back to her home country. The GSSF is competitive. Since the McCulloch Center may not fund a student's total proposed budget, we encourage all students to pursue additional sources of funding.
Students apply for the GSSF are required to submit the Universal Application Form. The deadline is Friday, February 26, 2010 at 5 p.m.
