Applying for a Foreign Fellowship
Admission Requirements In considering applicants for Foreign Fellowships, our selection committees will look for students with a record of high academic achievement who can benefit from the opportunity to study at Mount Holyoke College. In addition, the language departments seek students who have experience or interest in teaching (whether it be language or another subject), the ability to organize activities, and the ability to work well with groups and with people from different backgrounds. You should include in your application any such information about your background and interests. You should also ask the persons writing letters of recommendation for you to refer specifically to any information or insights they may have about your experience and ability as a teacher or coordinator (as well as your academic background and any personal qualities they may wish to mention). In particular, you should ask them to consider the following points in writing their recommendations (It may be helpful for you to give a copy of this information to each person writing a recommendation for you.):
- Teaching experience, either of language or another subject
- Leadership qualities
- Ability to adjust to a new cultural environment
- Ability to work well with others, including persons from a variety of backgrounds
How to Apply Applications for the Foreign Fellowships are due on February 1 each year. To apply, you must submit the following documents to the McCulloch Center for Global Initiatives (you may download the forms from this web site, or request copies from the McCulloch Center for Global Initiatives):
- A statement, in English, giving a brief autobiography, your reasons for wishing to study at Mount Holyoke College, your general plan for study here, and your career plans after the completion of your studies.
- The completed application form.
- A report from your secondary school completed by the principal or headmaster, not just one of your teachers. The person completing the form should attach an official copy of your academic record (transcript), showing individual courses taken and grades earned.
- A report from your college or university completed by a registrar, dean, or department head. The person completing the form should attach an official copy of your academic record (transcript), showing individual courses taken and grades earned.
- Report of TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score.
- Three (or four) letters of recommendation from persons other than those submitting the official records. Two letters should be from professors acquainted with you and your academic work; one letter should be from someone qualified to report on your proficiency in English. In addition, you may submit a recommendation from your employer(s), if any.
We realize that different educational systems around the world use different methods of reporting students' work. If you have questions about what documents we need from your secondary school and university, please let us know.
We expect to notify students of the results in April each year. We receive many applications and have a limited number of Fellowships to offer, so only a small percentage of those who apply can receive awards.
If you have questions about the Foreign Fellowship program or about Mount Holyoke in general, please contact the McCulloch Center for Global Initiatives.
