Duties of a Foreign Fellow
As your contract letter states, you are obligated to work a maximum of 8 hours per week (this INCLUDES preparation time!) for the language department with which you are affiliated. The nature of your work will involve preparing for and leading a maximum of 5 weekly conversation sessions and participating in your language department's language table, language club, and assisting with other cultural activities that the department specifies. Your work should not involve correction of tests, essays, or homework.
Before you begin your duties, your language department will supply you with the following information:
- A written summary of your departmental responsibilities in the form of guidelines. Here are links to the guidelines for each language:
- A copy of every book for each course with which you are involved. A course syllabus or weekly outline (so that you know what to do in your conversation sessions).
- A list of the students in each of your conversation sessions, as well as meeting places and times for each conversation session.
- Keys to the your language department office.
- Access to a copy (xerox) machine (or access number for the machine in the Ciruti Center), or instructions on the procedure for making photocopies. Your department's administrative assistant can provide you with supplies, keys, and show you how to make photocopies.
During each semester you should meet regularly with your department liaison and with instructors of the courses with which you are assisting. Your liaison should observe and evaluate your conversation sessions at least once per semester.
If you have questions or problems, contact (in this order):
- Your language department liaison (a professor).
- The chair of your language department.
- Donna Van Handle, Dean of International Students.
This document has been officially endorsed by FLEX (Foreign Language Executive Board).
