Mount Holyoke students are eager to put their considerable talents, curiosity, and energies to work by participating in summer opportunities abroad.

Fortunately, as professors we are equally eager to help match their interests and talents with the research and service being done by our many overseas colleagues. This summer, one of my students participated in an archaeological excavation in Jordan, another worked with youth affected by AIDS in Zambia, and a third assisted a team of cataract surgeons traveling through rural Ghana. It can take a lot of work to find the right fit for each deserving student, but the rewards make it well worth the effort.

Summer Internships

Internships abroad give students the opportunity to apply what they learn in the classroom in a practical setting and challenge students to adapt to a new culture within a professional context.   By doing an international internship, you can gain a global perspective on issues in your chosen field, develop competency in a cross-cultural work environment, and distinguish yourself in a competitive job market.

An international internship offers students the chance to immerse themselves fully in the host country, where they are working full-time and contibuting to the daily operations of the host organization. Working in a different cultural context challenges students to communicate across difference and develop a global perspective in their chosen academic or professional field.

Each year the College funds students for unpaid summer learning opportunities through the Career Development Center Universal Application Form.

Working and living in a very different culture was a challenge unlike any other I have experienced.  But the summer I spent in Japan was also one of the most rewarding experiences in my college career, mostly of the incredibly strong, great friendships I developed with the students.  It was amazing how alike we are, even while leading incredibly different lives.
