Michelle Thorne, ‘07 Heidelberg, Germany
Michelle Thorne is a double major in Critical Social Thought and German Studies who spent a year abroad at the University of Leipzig, in Leipzig, Germany.
My year abroad was one of the best experiences of my life. Not only did my familiarity with Germany grow, but I felt that I became integrated into the student body and life at a large, European university. I met many wonderful people, both local and fellow foreigners. My academic interests crystallized thanks to one of my courses. Also I was able to join in the ruckus of the World Cup and participate not only as a spectator, but as an employee. I learned more than I expected about Europe, living on my own, my American identity, and what an amazing place this little jewel in Saxony is.
When: My junior year (2005-2006).
Why did you choose to study abroad: Although I had grown up in Heidelberg, Germany, I always felt as though I had never been truly immersed in German culture. My home was an American army base, which turned out to be more like Bubble Americana than living in a foreign country. Not only did I see the chance to study in Leipzig as a chance to improve my language skills, but it was also the first time that I would be in the eastern part. I was eager to explore the similarities and differences in this region that was once a separate country.
What language did you speak: German, primarily. It is the same as the local language, unless you call Sächisch its own language. This accent from Saxony can be very difficult for foreigners and even other Germans to understand!
What did you study: I took seminars in politics, philosophy, intellectual property rights, and translation. I also co-founded a competitive soccer team for international and German students.
What next: I am a finalist for a Fulbright to Germany to research the development of German intellectual property laws, particularly copyright in Saxony. I also plan to spend that time working with an international non-profit organization, Creative Commons, located in Berlin.
