Arti Sarma, ‘07
Hollywood, FL

Arti Sarma is a double major in Psychology and Asian Studies who spent a year abroad in Madurai, India, through a University of Wisconsin-Madison Program.

The most meaningful part of the experience is the relationships I built with people there, which gave me more than a glimpse into the love and renowned hospitality of the people in South India.

When:  My junior year (2005-2006).

Why did you choose to study abroad: I was born and raised in the U.S. - the first in my family - but I retained a very strong connection to my Indian heritage.  I lost my ability to speak fluently in my native language, Tamil, when I was around 3 years old and I very badly wanted to re-learn it.  I never lived anywhere but Florida and in my dorm on campus, so this was my first chance to really expand outside my tiny bubble!

What language did you speak:  Tamil.

What did you study: I studied Tamil, South Indian classical vocal music (Carnatic music), and I did an independent ethnographic report.  I also took an intensive 8-week course in Tamil language prior to departure.  After the program ended, I conducted independent research in a local woman's college under the mentorship of a MHC faculty member in the psychology department, funded through the Weed grant.

What next: I am currently in the process of applying for a Fulbright grant for an intensive study of Carnatic music in India.  I hope to apply and begin a doctoral program in psychology within the year or two and eventually become a therapist.
