Cynthia Rohrer, ‘09 Hong Kong, China
Cynthia Rohrer is a double major in Mathematics and Engineering Sciences who spent a summer interning at Diguang Electronics in Shenzhen, China.
A Hong Kong native who is familiar with Chinese culture, I became aware of the subtle differences between citizens of Hong Kong and neighboring Shenzhen. I was initially bothered by the attention I received in Shenzhen because of my foreign appearance, but gradually I learned to overcome my discomfort and instead appreciate the extensive cultural exposure.
When did you go: Summer before my sophomore year (Summer 2006)
Why did you intern abroad: I wanted to immerse myself in a culture that was new to me but whose language I spoke so that I could improve my language skills. I especially wanted to experience life in Mainland China as I’d like to live there after graduation.
What language did you speak: Mainly Mandarin Chinese, with some English and Cantonese Chinese. My constant translation improved my spoken Mandarin Chinese tremendously.
What did you do: I received technical training at the company factory, explained backlight product specifications to foreign clients at an international exhibition, translated engineering documents and company catalogues into English, and taught business English classes to the marketing staff.
What next: It was because of this internship that I decided to pursue a degree in Engineering Sciences; I am increasingly aware of the connections between business and engineering. I’m now eager to explore more opportunities in other parts of China.
