Jane Chung ‘07 Waipahu, Hawaii
Jane Chung is a double major in Biology and Politics and worked as a summer intern at Tanzania Pharmaceutical Industries and Arusha Regional Hospital.
I will be working for an international human rights organization post-graduation and hope to accompany my mentor on trips to her other projects elsewhere in Africa.
When: Summer 2006 (between Junior and Senior Year).
Why an international internship: Since I can remember I've wanted to go to an internship or program in Africa. Tanzania is a very safe country in East Africa and since this internship combined experiences in a local pharmaceutical company and regional hospital and was developed by someone I consider a mentor. It was perfect.
What language did you speak: English, minimal (survival) Swahili
What did you do: At the TPI, I worked in the Quality Control department where I ran quality control tests on batches of the various tablets of medication . In the hospital, I observed and minimally assisted physicians in the Ob/Gyn, Surgical, Internal Medicine, Pharmacy, and Pediatrics Departments of the Hospital. I also got to do a bit of traveling: I went on safari to Ngorogoro Crater, the Serengeti, climbed a part of Mt. Kilimanjaro and visited Moshi and Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.
What next: My goal is to get a Masters in International Health and eventually attend medical school. After med school, I plan to work in a country like Tanzania or North Korea and at some point in time serve as an emergency response physician and serve in post-disaster situations and areas. I hope to develop programs that tend to the health care needs of refugees and defectors from North Korea.
