Nicaragua

This picture was taken at a dump in the outskirts of Managua, Nicaragua. The boy in the picture is one of many young children who live and work in this dump. The government of Nicaragua has allowed a shanty town to be built within the dump provided that the "residents" work in the dump, separating various types of trash. The majority of the families living in the dump are headed by single mothers, who are given no other opportunities in the country due to severe inequalities among its "second class" citizens, such as indigenous peoples and women. Social inequalities are particularly harsh in Nicaragua given the amount of scarcity in such a poverty-stricken country.
