Genocide Intervention Network in Washington, D.C.

Genocide Intervention Network Washington, D.C.

Position: Intern
Placement Housing: Intern must find own housing in the D.C. area
Duration: 8 weeks

The Genocide Intervention Network (GI-Net) is a non-profit organization located in Washington, D.C., that works to mobilize an anti-genocide constituency in the United States and Canada to raise the costs for inaction by politicians in the face of genocide. GI-Net is committed to changing the way the United States and the international community respond to the world's worst crime by empowering individuals and communities with the tools to prevent and end genocide.

The organization's aim is to recruit a committed and diverse group of individuals to form an active network that educates communities, pressures elected officials, and fundraises directly for civilian protection. Currently, GI-Net is focused on ending the ongoing genocide in Darfur, Sudan where more than 400,000 people have been killed and over 2.5 million have been displaced; providing material support for African Union peacekeepers in the Darfur region; and organizing political action campaigns for a more substantial civilian protection force.

In partnership with the McCulloch Center for Global Initiatives, the Genocide Intervention Network will place one Mount Holyoke student in one of numerous areas, including: Advocacy, Development, Education, Web Development, and Public Relations. The student selected for the position will be matched with a specific role in the organization depending on her interest, experience, academic focus, and professional goals.
