International Student Testimonials

Carolina Rodriguez Buitrago (Colombia):
At Mount Holyoke I got more than just the "international experience" I was hoping for when I first got there. I got a whole new understanding of my own identity as a South American, as a Colombian, as a student, and as a woman. Now I´m back home, but MHC and everything I learned there are going to live forever in my heart and mind. I got to meet amazing people: professors, students, and friends who made my life a lot better and who helped me really value everything I am and I can be.

Yang Huang (China): I really enjoyed meeting friends from different countries and learning about other cultures. The multicultural experience at MHC greatly enriched my life, and led me to study another foreign language which I am continuing. As an international student I felt quite at home because there were a lot of people like me and many festivals celebrating our diverse cultures. Another big plus is the food at MHC: I loved being able to have dim-sum, pho or sushi along with New England clam chowder in Blanchard or one of the dining halls.

Simonetta Menossi (Italy): Living, studying and teaching as a Foreign Fellow for the Italian Department at Mount Holyoke College for one academic year has completely changed my life. This has been the most extraordinary experience I have ever had because at the College I met incredible students willing to learn Italian, my language, with so much passion and interest. Here I really found my new independent dimension.

Cristina Gall (Romania): Mount Holyoke is a wonderful place for international students! Everybody has been very supportive so I had no trouble adapting to this big change in my life. Many times during class when we are discussing a particular aspect of a distant country, a student from that country talks about her first-hand experiences. There are many resources for international students on campus, and there is always someone to talk to if you have a problem, be it taxes, visa requirements, or general advice about life in the United States.

Teodora Spasova (Bulgaria): Being an international student at MHC is a experience that helped me grow intellectually and personally. The faculty and students are so supportive and understanding from the outset that one ends up quickly forgetting the initial anxiety of being different. It helps students to appreciate diversity as something truly valuable, a hallmark of the close-knit campus community.

Lydie Ky (Burkina Faso): My international student life at Mount Holyoke has been a truly fascinating adventure. Although I am the sole and first student from Burkina Faso at the College, I never had the impression of being on my own or singled out. I made new friends, joined different organizations and partook in my residence hall's activities. Now I almost wish that I didn't have to graduate next year, so I could enjoy the company of my friends for a longer time. My experience at MHC will always be one of the most memorable moments of my life.

Andreea Ciuca (Romania): Freedom! It is freedom that gives resonance to my life at Mount Holyoke. Through my own experience and through the eyes of the fantastic women with whom I became friends at MHC, I have found a new meaning for the word "freedom": freedom to speak my thoughts without being silenced; freedom to realize my potential; freedom to express myself without being judged or categorized; freedom to make my own choices and take responsibility for them. Freedom! Mount Holyoke opened my mind and my heart to all kinds of people. I came to understand that I have indeed the freedom and the power to change the world!
