The McCulloch Center Global Engagement Award
in recognition of outstanding commitment to raising awareness of critical global issues across campus and beyond.
Citation for Aleefia Somji ‘09
The McCulloch Center is delighted to recognize Aleefia for her remarkable work in raising awareness about HIV/AIDs, both in India and here at Mount Holyoke.
After completing her study abroad semester last spring investigating healthcare systems in India, China, and South Africa, Aleefia pursued a summer internship with Wake Up Pune, a coalition of NGOs in Pune, India, dedicated to HIV/AIDS education. As a coordinator at the organization, Aleefia played a critical role in organizing HIV/AIDS information sessions at companies, in schools, and in public spaces. A true student of the liberal arts, Aleefia combined her study of biology and public health with her interest in theater to develop a drama program in a local high school that focused on fighting the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS.
Building upon her experience last spring and summer, Aleefia worked as co-chair of last fall’s Student Global AIDS Campaign, a week of events aimed at educating all Mount Holyoke students about HIV/AIDS. This spring, the Student Global AIDS Campaign will launch the “HIV Positive” initiative at MHC:
positive about education, positive about awareness, and positive about support.
We salute you, Aleefia! Congratulations! |
