Frequently Asked Questions

* How do I get rid of the copyright message?

The .CONTROLS command will do this. The easiest way is to use <!--.controls nocopy-->.

* How do I add a counter to my pages?

If you are using the document interface, the .COUNTER command will do this. If you are not using the DI, please refer to this page.

* How do I get rid of the navigation bar?

The .CONTROLS command will do this. The easiest way is to use <!--.controls notop-->.

* Why isn't the navigation bar appearing?

Perhaps you did not give your file the proper ending. Instead of ending the filename with .html or .htm, you must use .shtml or .shm. Think "scripted HTML".

Another possibility is that you are not viewing the page using the Web server, but rather through a local network connection. Take a look at the Location line in your Web browser. Does it start with file://? If so, then you are viewing the page without the benefit of the DI. The URL must begin with http://www... in order for the DI to interpret the page.

* Why am I seeing the navigation bar twice? or
Why does the message "Error: This page includes a copy of the document interface code..." appear?

When editing an existing page that use the DI, you have to be sure you are using the right way to access the files. If you use Netscape or another browser to go to a page on our site that shows the navigation bar, and then either save this page or use Netscape's Edit Page function, you are editing a page which includes the results of the document interface calls; you aren't editing the true source as it resides on the Web server.

What you need to do is connect to the server using the MHC network and open the file through the network connection.

* Why does the message "This page has been improperly attributed" appear?

At the very least, files on the main server that use the document interface must have both the .MADE and .MAINTAINS commands in them. The command creation wizard is a quick way to create the necessary code.
