Banner
The MHC navigation bar and and department banner automatically
appear on all Web pages that use ".shm" or ".shtml"
file extensions. The option to turn this feature on or off is available
in the Document Interface Command Creation Wizard
(DI Wizard). Upon completing the wizard, HTML code is generated
for you to copy from the Web browser and then paste into blank Web
page documents or templates.

The banner was designed with the intention of incorporating it
with the complete MHC Web design. Therefore, we ask that you:
- do not alter the banner image other than to make the title
appropriate to your department,
- keep the title to one line only, and
- do not adjust the height or width of the image.
Your department or Web site name will appear on the MHC banner
(as shown above) according to the information you submitted in the
DI Wizard. The Wizard will ask for your department name and place
the department name in the designated area. Be sure to use the ".shm"
or ".shtml" file extensions, rather than ".html"
for all Web pages that you want to have the MHC banner.
If you need to change your existing file extensions, we encourage
you to do so with the Dreamweaver site management tool. This tool
allows you the option to have Dreamweaver update your all your links
to the files that you rename.
Banner Image Master
In step 3 of the Document Interface Wizard, you are provided the
option to use an HTML text banner or to insert a banner image or
to insert an image banner for your department. If your department
title is lengthy, you will need to create an image banner or the
length of your title will distort the page layout, as shown in the
example below.

If you have Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, the following instructions
will help you to create an image for your title. If you do not have
either of these applications, email webhelp@mtholyoke.edu
and ask for a title banner; include the exact title name.
- Connect to official Webspace
- Open Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.
- In Photoshop, go to: help/creating-pages/style/psd/ and open
(Note: these PSD files cannot be opened from a Web browser)
- title.psd - for short titles (325 x 53)
- title-long.psd - for titles that are long (420
x 53)
Do not alter the font size or type or the image.
- Select the typing tool and highlight the title that appears.
- With the text highlighted, type the desired title which will
replace the previous one.
- Reduce the font size if necessary, then "save for the web"
as "title.gif" in the images folder of your Webspace.
