Images for the Web
Mount Holyoke College requires that anyone placing images or text
on the Web site obey international copyright law. Just because an
image appears on someone else's Web page, that does not necessarily
mean you are not violating copyright law by including it on your
page. If you did not take the photo or draw it yourself, there is
a very good chance someone holds the copyright to it! Common copyrighted/trademarked
images include: cartoon characters from comic strips and television;
product logos; photographs from newspapers, magazines and books;
etc.
Image Sizes
To avoid distorting your page layout, keep your images within
the limits as indicated in the examples below. There is no limit
to the length of the image. However, keep in mind that the larger
the image, the larger the file size. The larger the file size -
the longer it will take for the page to download - especially for
off-campus visitors.
The MHC Web design has specific widths for each column. In the
examples below, the pixel width refers to the maximum width an image
can be in each column.
Image Size for Specific Columns

In the example below, the page layout is distorted because the
image in the second column is wider than the width of the column.

Rotating Images
In the three-column page layout, you may want
to insert images that rotate randomly when the page reloads. See
more information and instructions on how to incorporate rotating
images.
