Connect to Web Volume on a Mac from on Campus

NOTE: You must have file permissions before you can write to areas other than your personal Webspace. To obtain permission to read and write to official MHC Web sites, email webmaster@mtholyoke.edu. Include your username (i.e.: tchamber) and indicate the Web space location that you want to read/write to (i.e.: acad/engl).

Overview

  • Before opening Dreamweaver, you need to connect to the network.
  • When working with Dreamweaver you will need to define a local site, which tells Dreamweaver where your Web site files are stored.
  • It is essential that you use Dreamweaver's site map tool if your Web site uses templates.
I. Connect to Network space on Mac OS X

A. Connect to Server

  1. From your desktop pull down menu, select Go (see A1).
  2. Select Connect to Server(see A2)screen shot

B. Connect to Server
From the "Connect to Server" dialogue box:

  1. Choose www from the list of servers (see B1).
  2. Then select Connect (see B2).

C. Connect to the File Server "Webspace - COB" as

  1. Select Registered User (see C1).
  2. Type your username (see C2).
  3. Type your password (see C3).
  4. Select connect (see C4).

D. Select Volumes
In the "Webspace - COB" dialogue box:

  1. Select Webspace (see D1).
  2. Select OK (see D2).

E. Webspace Window
On your desktop, a window to your Webspace will open (see E).

Close the Webspace window.

  • Do not open files from the desktop folders.
  • Open Dreamweaver, define your site (see instructions below) and then open files from the site map tool within Dreamweaver.

II. Define Local Site in Dreamweaver

After you connect to the Webspace, open Dreamweaver. Note: When you open Dreamweaver, a blank document automatically appears.

A. Define Site
Once you are connected to your Webspace, open Dreamweaver and define your site:

  1. From Dreamweaver's pull down menu, select Site (see A1).
  2. Then select New Site (see A2). screen shot

B.  Site Definition: Editing Files:

Next, a "Site Definition" dialog box will appear; complete the site definition as follows:

  1. 1. Click on the Basic tab (see B1)
  2. 2. What would you like to name your site? Enter the name of your site (see B2). This is for your reference only, therefore caps and spaces are allowed here.
  3. Choose Next (see B3).

  1. Select No, I do not want to use server technology (see C1).
  2. Select Next (see C2).

  1. How do you want to work with your files during development? Select Edit directly on server using local network (see D1).
  2. Where are your files on the Network? Select the folder icon (see D2).

  3. Another dialogue box will open. Click on the arrow (see D3).
  4. Click on Webspace (see D4) and then select the path to your Webspace folder.
  5. Click on Choose (see D5).

  6. When the Site Definition box appears again; choose Next (see D6).

E. Site Definition: Summary

  1. Choose Done (see E1).

F.  Edit Sites
Next, the "Edit Sites" dialogue box will appear. Your site should be highlighted.

  1. Choose Done (see F1).

G. Scanning Files.
You should see another dialogue box indicating Dreamweaver is "scanning all files in site"  (see G).

Allow this scanning to take place.

H. Site Map Tool
Use the site map tool (see H) to view and modify your files in Dreamweaver.
