Audacity Audio Recording Download Instructions
Audacity is software that you can use to record your voice. It is installed and ready to use on machines in the Information Commons (Miles-Smith), MEWS (Dwight) and LRC (Ciruti), which has private rooms for recording. Audacity is also available to download to your personal computer for free. Below are instructions, with links to the appropriate installation files, explaining how to install this software on your own computer. USB headphones with microphones are available to borrow at the Library Circulation Desk (Williston) and the LRC (Ciruti).
CHOOSE THE INSTRUCTIONS APPROPRIATE FOR YOUR COMPUTER'S OPERATING SYSTEM:
Windows XP or Vista: 1) First install the Audacity program file.
- Download this installer file: audacity-win-unicode-1.3.7.exe
- Once you've downloaded the file, double-click on it to start the install.
- A "Select Setup Language" window will open - English is the default. Click on "OK" to continue.
- Click "Next."
- Select "I accept the agreement" to accept the License Agreement then click "Next."
- Click "Next."
- Leave the "Select Destination Location" window as is and click "Next."
- Leave the "Select Additional Task" window as is and click "Next."
- Click "Install."
- In the "Completing Audacity 1.3 Beta (Unicode) Setup Wizard" window, uncheck the "Launch Audacity" box and click "Finish."
2) After you install the Audacity program file, you'll want to download and install an encoder that will enable Audacity to save files as MP3s (necessary for uploading to ella and sharing with other people).
- Download this installer file: Lame_v3.98.2_for_Audacity_on_Windows.exe
- Once you've downloaded the file, double-click on it to start the install.
- Click "Next."
- Select "I accept the agreement" to accept the License Agreement then click on "Next."
- Leave the "Select Destination Location" window as is and click "Next."
- Click "Install."
- In the "Completing the LAME for Audacity Setup Wizard" window click on "Finish."
3) Configure Audacity's preferences.
- Open Audacity (Start > Program Files > Audacity or by clicking on icon on desktop).
- An Audacity "Getting Started" window will open - if you don't want to see this every time the program starts, check the "Don't show this again at start up" box before clicking on "OK."
- In the Audacity menu bar, click on "Edit" > "Preferences."
- In the Audacity Preferences window, select the "Audio I/O" item in the left side menu.
- On the right side of the window, find the check box in the Playthrough section labeled "Overdub" and click to select it.
- Back in Audacity Preferneces left side menu, select the "Import/Export" item.
- On the right side of the window, find the check box labeled "Show Metadata Editor prior to export setup." Unless you want to enter metadata (information like the Artist Name, Track Title, Year, Genre, etc.) for every audio file you record, click to deselect this box.
- Click "OK" to exit Audacity Preferences.
4) Optional! If you wish to edit/export .wav audio files using Audacity, you'll need to install an ffmpeg encoder.
- Download this installer file: FFmpeg_2009_01_08_for_Audacity_on_Windows.exe
- Once you've downloaded the file, double-click on it to start the install.
- Click "Next."
- Select "I accept the agreement" to accept the License Agreement then click on "Next."
- Leave the "Select Destination Location" window as is and click "Next."
- Click "Install."
- In the "Completing the FFmpeg for Audacity Setup Wizard window click on "Finish."
- Open Audacity (Start > Program Files > Audacity or by clicking on icon on desktop).
- In the Audacity menu bar, click on "Edit" > "Preferences."
- In the Audacity Preferences window, select the "Import/Export" item in the left side menu.
- On the right side of the window, find the FFmpeg Import/Export Library section and click on the "Locate" button.
- A "Success" window will open with the message "Audacity has automatically detected valid FFmpeg libraries. Do you still want to locate them manually?" Click on "No."
- Click "OK" to exit Audacity Preferences.
How to tell which version of OS X your Mac is running: First things first. You need to know what type of operating system is on your computer. If you don't know this or are unsure, click on the little apple icon in the upper left corner of the Desktop and then on "About This Mac." In the new window that opens, directly under Mac OS X you'll see the Version information.
Mac OS X version 10.4 or later: 1) First install the Audacity program file
- Open Finder, navigate to the Applications folder and create a new folder named Audacity.
- Download this installer file: audacity-macosx-ub-1.3.7.dmg
- Once it's on your desktop, double click on it.
- A disk image named "Audacity 1.3.7.1 will appear in Finder. Select all the contents of the disk image (an Audacity icon, Languages folder, LICENSE.txt file, nyquist folder, pug-ins folder, and README.txt file) and copy or drag these into the Audacity folder that you created earlier in Applications.
2) After you install the Audacity program file, you'll want to install an encoder that will enable Audacity to save audio files as MP3s (necessary for uploading to ella and sharing with other people).
- Download this installer file: Lame_Library_v3.98.2_for_Audacity_on_OSX.dmg
- After you download the file, double click on it to start the installation.
- A disk image named "Lame Library v3.98.2 for Audacity" will appear in Finder. The content of the disk image is a file named Lame Library v3.98.2 for Audacity.pkg - double click on this to start the installation.
- When the installer window opens, in the Introduction screen click "Continue." In the Destination Select screen click on the "Macintosh_HD" icon then click on "Continue." In the Installation Type screen click on "Install."
- You'll be prompted for your password (this is the administrator password on your computer) - enter it and click "OK."
- When the install is finished, you'll get an "Install Succeeded" message - click on "Close."
3) Configure Audacity's preferences.
- In Finder > Applications, open Audacity (Note: You may get a message telling you that "Audacity is an application which was downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it?" Click on "Open.").
- Audacity's "Getting Started" window will open - if you don't want this to open each time you use Audacity, check the "Don't show this again at start up box" then click "OK."
- In the menu bar, click on "Audacity" > "Preferences"
- In the Audacity Preferences window that opens, click on the Import/Export item in the menu on the left side of the window.
- In the right side of the window, find the check box labeled "Show Metadata Editor prior to export setup." Unless you want to enter metadata (information like the Artist Name, Track Title, Year, Genre, etc.) for every audio file you record, uncheck this box.
- Click "OK" to exit Audacity Preferences.

- After you download the file, double click on it.
- A disk image named "FFmpeg Libraries for Audacity" will appear in Finder. The content is a FFmpeg Libraries for Audacity on OSX.pkg file. Double click on it to start the installer.
- When the installer window opens, in the Introduction screen click "Continue." In the Destination Select screen click on the "Macintosh_HD" icon then click on "Continue." In the Installation Type screen click on "Install."
- When the install is finished, you'll get an "Install Succeeded message - click on "Close."
- In Finder > Applications, open Audacity.
- In the menu bar, click on "Audacity" > "Preferences"
- In the Audacity Preferences window that opens, click on the Import/Export item in the menu on the left side of the window.

Mac OS X versions 10.1 to 10.3: 1) First install the Audacity program file.
- Open Finder, navigate to the Applications folder and create a new folder named Audacity.
- Download this installer file: audacity-macosx-intel-1.2.5.dmg
- After you donwload the file, double click on it to start the installation.
- A disk image named "Audacity 1.2.5 will appear in Finder. Select all the contents of the disk image (an Audacity icon, Languages folder, LICENSE.txt file, nyquist folder, plug-ins folder, and README.txt file) and copy or drag into the Audacity folder thatyou created in Applications.

3) Configure Audacity's preferences.

- In the menu bar, click on "Audacity" > "Preferences"
- In the Audacity Preferences window that opens, click on the "Audio I/O" tab to view Playback and Recording options. Find and select the check box labeled "Play other tracks while recording new one."
- Click on the "File Formats" tab to view file format options. In the "MP3 Export Setup" section, click on the "Find Library" button.
- An "Export MP3" window will open asking if you'd "like to locate libmp3lame.dylib now?" Click on "Yes."
- An "Open" window will appear allowing you to navigate to the location of the libmp3lame.dylib file. The window should already show an "audacity" folder. Click on the folder to show its contents, click on the libmp3lame.dylib file that will appear in the list, then click on "Open."
- Click "OK" to exit Audacity Preferences.
