Searching for Books

Women's Studies materials may be found throughout the library stacks, depending upon the specific subject you are seeking. One place that might be useful for browsing, however, is the HQ section in the Main Stacks. You may search for books using the Five College Online Library Catalog by author, title or subject. The following are examples of subject headings that might be useful: "Women's Rights," "African American Women," "Feminist Theory," and "Feminism United States."

Searching for Articles: Indexes
  • Women's Studies International (1972-present)
    Covers the core disciplines in Women’s Studies to the latest scholarship in feminist research, including Women Studies Abstracts (formerly only available in print) and the Women of Color and Southern Women Bibliography. Women's Studies International supports curriculum development in the areas of sociology, history, political science & economy, public policy, international relations, arts & humanities, business and education. Nearly 800 essential sources include: journals, newspapers, newsletters, bulletins, books, book chapters, proceedings, reports, theses, dissertations, NGO studies, important websites & web documents, and grey literature. Over 2,000 periodical sources are represented. Updated quarterly.
  • Contemporary Women's Issues (1992 - present)
    Citation index to global information on women with some full text. Indexes over 1500 periodicals, including journals, newsletters, research reports from non-profit groups, government and international agencies. Includes references to gray literature and other sources that are not as easily found in mainstream sources. Updated weekly. Journals Indexed.
  • Women's Studies Index :a good complement to the Women Studies Abstracts. This titles indexes feminist journals as well as a number of popular women's magazines. Published annually.Available in print only in the Reference Room, call # Z7962 .W675 REF.
  • Alternative Press Index (1991 - present)
    Alternative Press Index Archive (1969-1990)
    A major bibliographic resource for alternative press publications in North America, indexing over 250 journals, magazines, and newsletters not easily found in mainstream sources. Topics include human rights, politics, policy, and radical movements and cover some international sources. Updated quarterly. Journals indexed.
  • Family and Society Studies Worldwide (1995 - present)
    Interdisciplinary index coverage of research, policy, and practice literature in the fields of Family Science, Human Ecology, Human Development, and Social Welfare. FSSW is an anthology of 4 database files providing access to over 844,780 records. Coverage spans from 1970 to the present.         
  • AGRICOLA :this online service indexes a range of publications focused on agriculture. Useful for information on women in development, women and the environment, etc.Produced by the National Agricultural Library.
  • Feminae: Medieval Women & Gender Index :scholarship on women, sexuality and gender. Index to journal articles and essay collections. See introductory page for information on the scope of the project.
