Ready Reference Sources Searching for Books Bibliographies and Indexes
  • MEDLINE/ PubMed
    PubMed is a web-based service from the National Library of Medicine, providing free access to MEDLINE (1966 to present) and to GenBank and other information. MEDLINE is an enormous, well-indexed database covering most of the world's biomedical literature. PubMed is more current than any other version of MEDLINE because it includes pre-MEDLINE entries submitted by publishers. PubMed Tutorial. Also seachable via NLM Gateway.
  • MEDLINEplus Health information for consumers (not really an index, but includes some pre-formulated searches of MEDLINE)
  • Bibliography of BioEthics -- shelved in Reference R724.B53
  • CancerLit -- searchable via NCI's Cancer Literature page
  • Health Reference Center (1980-present) indexes general interest health and fitness magazines, medical and professional periodicals, and selected reference books and pamphlets. Some fulltext provided.
  • POPLINE cites published and unpublished reports on population, family planning, and related health issues.
  • Web of Science: a major web-based service covering 5,700 journals in science and over 2,000 in other disciplines. 1945 to present. Special feature: search by cited reference (to find newer papers that refer to an earlier known work).

Current Awareness
  • Ingenta: free access to tables of contents for over 27,000 publications, searchable by title keyword, author, or periodical title. Ingenta provides links to full-text of 4500 publications (free for subscribers, or pay-per-view).
