Quota
What Problems Occur When Quotas Are Exceeded:
- Have you received an email message stating that you are over quota?
- Have you gotten windows errors stating that there is no more space available on mapped drives?
- Is email not functioning properly?
Check your quota status:
- Sign into MHC Webmail and select the webshell icon from the panel at the bottom
- Select the disk quotas link from the frame on the left
- You may also login into mhc via telnet or an ssh session, and at the % prompt type (without quotes) "quota".
The first column, labeled Filesystem, indicates the network location name of individual spaces that is referenced in the remaining columns.
- /mailfs is your inbox
- /u6 is your home directory
- /webcourses is your course webpages
The second column tells your the purpose of the space, a "friendlier" explanation.
The third column is your current file size stats. "Blocks" indicate how much of your quota you've used. If this number is followed by an asterisk, you are overquota in the named network space. To help equate this to what we're use to with windows, roughly, 1000 blocks is close to a MB
The 4th column, grace, tells you what your "soft"quota limit is.
The 5th is the "hard limit", which it is not possible to go over.
In Column 6 is your "grace period". This is how long you have to get back under quota. You are able to remain over quota for 7 days, and then files become locked. If you go over quota, it is imperitive that you make efforts to get back under before 7 days otherwise you will experience problems. If your inbox is over quota and out of grace period, then you will NOT receive email. New mail is not being queued up and you will not receive it later unless people re-send their emails!
What to do to get back under Quota
- Inbox
Symptom may be that you cannot receive new email.
- Home Directory
Symptoms include receiving error messages telling you that sent-mail cannot be saved. You may not be able to move mail out of your inbox into other folders.
If over quota with an other network space or website area:
- This is simple to fix, simply connect to the specific space, copy several older or unnecessary files to your own computer, and delete the network copy.
If you are in need of an increase of space as deemed necessary for your role or position here at MHC, please contact the Help Desk at x2600 or place the request via Trackit.
