Some useful resources for learning to author on the Web

The display of web documents is controlled by Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). Documents with HTML can be created in a number of ways. Some word processing programs and spreadsheets can output HTML documents directly. There are also HTML editors that can generate more elaborate effects. Some of these are free and some must be purchased.

Ultimately, what is produced is a text file with HTML tags that control the display of the text and graphics images that might also be included. Thus one could also use any text editor or word processing program that can produce text files.

It is useful to understand some of the basics of HTML even if you primarily use web authoring tools. Even with these tools, web authors occasionally find it useful to fine tune the documents by directly editing the HTML text file.

There are numerous web sources to help you learn HTML. There are a few of these links to such sites below, including one from Mount Holyoke College.

More information on creating web pages for the Mount Holyoke College web site can be found by clicking the HELP button at the top of this page.
