Agency History/Biographical note:
Byfield Female Seminary opened in 1806 in Byfield, Massachusetts and was the first female seminary in the state. It was later moved to Saugus, Massachusetts in 1822. Mary Lyon attended the Seminary in 1821 when Reverend Joseph Emerson was principal. The Seminary closed ca. 1825.

Scope and Content:
Records of a school founded in 1818 by Joseph Emerson. Located originally in Byfield, Mass., moved to Saugus, Mass. in 1822. Includes catalogues listing pupils, among them Mary Lyon and Zilpah Grant.
