Agency History/Biographical note:
Charlotte D'Evelyn was born on May 23, 1889 in San Francisco,
California. She received a B.A. from Mills College in 1911 and a
Ph.D. from Bryn Mawr College in 1917. She then began teaching at
Mount Holyoke College, and became a full professor in 1932, in the
English Department. She was chair of the department from 1939 until
1945. She edited many medieval texts and wrote a variety of articles
and papers, and continued her research after her retirement in 1954.
Charlotte D'Evelyn died on December 18, 1977 in Central Falls, Rhode
Island.
Scope and Content:
The Charlotte D'Evelyn Papers are made up of correspondence 1911-72,
writings 1909-67, dies of bookplate and coat of arms, photographs,
and lantern slides. The letters were primarly written to her family
describing her activities as a graduate student at Oxford University
and reflecting conditions in England during the first World War. The
writings include publications and manuscript editions of articles and
books on a variety of subjects dealing with medieval writing. Also
included are memoirs of Susan Taylor, Charlott D'Evelyn's mother.
The lantern slides were used by D'Evelyn in her classes at Mount
Holyoke College and pertain to English architecture, landscapes and
some Shakespearian memorabilia.
